Puja’s Birth Center Story

March 13th, 2021|

Even though I started my birth center experience late into my pregnancy (we moved to Oregon when I was six months along), I was instantly put at ease by the intimacy of the birth center and the genuine attentiveness of the midwives. I vividly remember being so surprised when a midwife called me (on a Friday evening!) to discuss lab test results. I appreciated not only the personal attention to this borderline issue, but also the birth center’s approach, which was to monitor rather than jump to a diagnosis. Everything resolved on its own and I am so thankful for the midwives walking with me on the journey, rather than jumping to conclusions and medicalizing the problem.

I feel so lucky and also so sad to have been one of the last births at the birth center. Having birth center care should be an option for all expecting parents. While some pregnancies and births do need medical intervention, the majority do not. Ideally, birth centers would be the norm for care, and hospitals would be an alternative. Before having my son at a different birth center in Ohio, I had mainly heard “horror stories” about birth from friends – all of these friends had had hospital births with unwanted, and likely unneeded, interventions. It wasn’t until meeting a coworker who had given birth at a birth center, and reading a book on natural births, that I realized how completely normal and wonderful giving birth can – and should – be.

Sheela’s Birth Center Story

March 3rd, 2021|

At the birth center, I never felt rushed and the midwives always took time to talk to me about my life, my work, and my general state of mind, not just the fact that I was going to have a baby. What I really remember most fondly about seeing the midwives is laughing. I genuinely enjoyed my appointments and I looked forward to them. Even though I saw quite a few different midwives, I felt like I got to develop a real connection with each one.”

Suzannah’s Birth Center Story

February 25th, 2021|

I chose the birth center during pregnancy with my first child, and it was the best decision I could have made. The space was always so welcoming and home-like, which immediately put me at ease, but more importantly, were the midwives and nurses who I got to know so well throughout my pregnancy. I really enjoyed working with each and every one of them and looked forward to my appointments. I ended up having some complications during my 3rd trimester, and the midwives went above and beyond to let me know they were there for me. There were many things beyond my control, and I had a lot of fear about having a hospital cesarean birth, but I was so grateful for being able to express to my midwives what was important to me, and have them advocate for me during the birth. I ended up having the most amazing experience, despite it being completely different than what I had envisioned, and much of that is due to the amazing care and support I received from the midwives.

Roxanne’s Birth Center Story

January 30th, 2021|

We received care at the birth center for all four of my pregnancies, and my first two were delivered at the birth center. I think what surprised me the most about the care we received at the birth center was the level of trust that developed between our family and all of the midwives and nurses. It was a two-way street too! In our first pregnancy, we attended the Centering Pregnancy classes and were trusted with doing some of our own basic prenatal care. In all of my pregnancies, I never doubted for a second that the midwife caring for me would help guide our child into the world safely, but with our wishes for minimal intervention in mind. In my deliveries, the midwives and nurses empowered me to trust my own body, to trust that I knew how to bring our baby into the world. And the lactation consultants taught me to trust that I could successfully breastfeed my child. I wish for all families to have this opportunity to feel so supported, and cannot wait to see a birth center reborn in our community.
